Indications
The negative impact of protruding ears on the psychology of the child or adult can be extremely significant on a daily basis. Otoplasty is a simple procedure that allows the patient to regain confidence in their appearance. The surgery aims to move the ears closer to the head or reduce the size of the ears themselves when they are larger than normal facial proportions.
Surgical technique
Depending on the individual aesthetic needs of each patient, otoplasty generally refers to the removal of excess skin behind the upper part of the ear. The surgeon often makes a small incision on the back of the flap and reveals the ear cartilage. He then modifies the cartilage relief and bends it upside down. After the procedure, a massive ear strap is made that should remain in place for a week. Then an elastic bandage or ribbon should be worn every night to protect the ears during sleep.
Type of anesthesia
Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia or sedation. People under 14 years of age require general anesthesia.
Duration of the operation
The procedure lasts about 1-2 hours.
Stay at the clinic
Otoplasty does not require you to stay in the clinic. It is considered a day care operation and therefore after surgery you can leave the clinic as soon as you feel well.
Postoperative period
After surgery, recovery is quick. Patients may initially feel some tenderness and weight in the ear area, but they soon recede.
Back to daily activities
Surgery patients can return to their daily activities in 1-2 days. They should avoid exposure to high or very low temperatures for one month after surgery. They should also avoid strenuous physical activity during their recovery, ie for about 10-15 days.
Results
The end results are permanent and can be seen immediately, but we have the final image of the ears after about 3-4 months.
